  • First Encounter

    James Cook discovered Australia and Stradbroke Island.
  • Contact

    Some locals of Stradbroke helps Mathew Flinders' crew. this was the first black and white contact on the island.
  • ShipWreck

    Finnegan and Parsons were shipwrecked on Mortan Bay island and were looked after by the locals and were taught how to make canoes and 8 months later they lefts on the ones they made.
  • The Naming

    Island waas renamed Straddbroke island in honour of Captain JH Rous, son of the Earl of Stradbroke. Also a loading/ unloading dock was established
  • Cotton

    A Cotton Plantation was establihed however soon after was abandoned.
  • Rising Tensions

    January 1831-December 1832: 10 or more clahesoccurred between. Stradbroke Island Aborigines and Europeans at Dunwich and Amity.The schooner Caledonia was captured by convicts and anchored off Amity Point.
  • Missonaires

    4 people set up a missonary and convert aboriginies to christianity.
  • Quarantine

    On 16 July Dunwich was named Moreton Bay’s quarantine station. the immigrant ship Emigrant arrived with typhus on board. The passengers were put into quarantine at Dunwich, 56 people died they are buried in the Dunwich cemetery.
  • No More Quarantine

    The Dunwich quarantine station closed but continued to be used
  • Asylum

    Peel Island was declared Moreton Bay’s official quarantine station. Dunwich became the home of the asylum.
  • The Split

    Billy North was granted a lease over Point Lookout. For nearly 40 years he ran cattle, at one stage supplying beef to the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum
  • Fishing Catastrophy

    The industry was severly impacted because of the outbreak of mud worm. Leading to many people losing jobs as it was a big employer
  • Prosperity

    The Prosperity sank off the coast of Stradbroke only 5 survived.
  • Tourism

    The tourist industry was set up on stradbroke.
  • Lighthouse

    The Point Lookout was built with the cylinders hence the name.
  • Mining

    The first sand mining began on stradbroke using shovels and trucks.
  • Ferry

    The first vehicular ferry sevice came to stradbroke making tourism easier. Also the Benevolent asylum closed and was made open to tourists.
  • Zinc

    Zinc Corp began sand mining on Stradbroke Island. The first shipment left the Island in 1950.
  • More Mining

    Mining for Rutile and Zircon began on the island making it the islands most major employer
  • More Ferrys

    The ferries began operating fully and bringing an influx of new tourists.
