Industrial Revolution
From 1860 to 1900 North America went through the industrial revolution. Steam power, railways, and the cotton gin were invented bring North America to its powerful industrial center.

French and Indian war
Lasting from 1754 to 1763, te British wanted to take over some of France's land in the new world and the French fought back. The Native Americans joined with the French because they didn't want the British to take away their land. The British won the war the British got much of French land and taxed the colonists to help pay.

Population Growth
Because of the Industrial Revolution, thousands of immigrants flooded to North America. With them more children were being born. This began the time of child labor, and better job opportunities.

Boston Massacre
The killing of five colonists by British Regulars. It was the result of the built tension ever since the troops first arrived in Massachusetts to enforce heavy tax burden imposed by the Townshend Acts.

The Revolutionary War
The war between Great Britain and the thirteen British colonies. This war was due to the culmination of American revolution where the colonists overthrew British rule. They won their freedom in 1778.

America Declares Independence
The Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independance proclaiming a new United States of America from Great Britain and its king. This declaration came about from the opposition to the oppressing forces imposed by Great Britain.

British surrender at Yorktown
General Charles Cornwallis surrenders at Yorktown, Virginia, five years after the U.S declares its independance. The British had 8,000 soldiers and were waiting for British ships to help from New York. The ships never arrived wich helped General George Washington and the continental army.

John Fitch invents steamboat
John Fitch was an American inventor who created the first steamboat. He demonstrated one on the Delaware River on August 22, 1787. He got the official patent on August 26, 1791 for the steamboat.

U.S. Constitution Ratified
The U.S. Constitution created a strong federal government and was signed by 38 out of 41 delegates. It had to be ratified by 9 of the 13 states in order for the constitution to become binding in law. It is the oldest written constitution that is stil being used today.

Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney invented a simple machine that influenced the history of the United States. He invented a cotton gin. The South became the cotton producing part of the country because Whitney’s cotton gin was able to successfully pull out the seeds from the cotton bolls.

Louisiana Purchase
This purchase consisted of France giving 828,000 square miles of their land to the west of the Mississippi River to America. It costed the U.S. $15 million in order to get the land. President Thomas Jefferson played a big part in the Louisana Purchase.

War of 1812
The War of 1812 was a long and dangerous war between the U.S. and Britian. The war lasted for 3 years until 1815. Britian had tried to restrict the U.S. trade and its expansion. The Treaty of Ghent ended the war on February 17, 1815.

Monroe Doctrine
James Monroe wrote the Monroe Doctrine to state that Europeans must stop trying to colonize America and that it would be looked at as agression towards them if the European powers continued to do so. He wanted to keep the New World and Old World seperate. This allowed for the Americas to continue to remain independent.

Texas gained independence from Mexico
This independence was caused by many factors the the Mexican government put onto the U.S. settlers. They abolished slavery which made it hard on the cotton economy. Also they abolished immigration which made many people incredibly angry. These problems and many other disagreements caused the independence through rebellions.

California Gold Rush

Women's Rights Convention
This was the first women's rights convention in the United States. It was held in Seneca Falls, New York. There were about 300 people that attended including 40 men. It was organized in order to discuss unfair treatment of women.

Civil War
In the spring of 1861, after years of tension and revolts between the northern and southern United States over issues including westward expansion and slavery exploded into the American Civil War. This was the most costliest war ever fougth on AMerican soil. The war lasted 4 years.

First Transcontinental Railroad
Leland Stanford and Thomas Clark Durant drove the last spike at Promontory, Utah, linking the eastern railroad system to California. In six years, more than 20,000 workers laid down some 1,700 miles of track.

Battle of Little Bighorn
The Sioux and allies fought the U.S. Army over the whites continously coming into their sacrd lands in the Black Hills. They defeated the U.S. Army and it ws called the worst American military disaster. Though the Sioux had one their union eventually fell to the whites.

"Jim Crow" laws
These laws imposed racial segregation and kept the whites and blacks away from eachother. The decision made at the court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson led the way to these racial seperations. They were mainly seperated in schools, restaurants, hospitals, and public places. These laws caused a huge controversy between the two races.
