Noam Chomsky began teaching linguistics at MIT soon after earning his doctorate. He began speaking out about behaviorism, which was the dominant school of thought until Chomsky came around. Behaviorism is simply the learning of behaviors through conditioning.

Chomsky came out with his review of B.F. Skinner's book Verbal Behavior, and began speaking more against behaviorism. Chomsky's idea about Linguistics began to gain popularity soon after.

In the 1970s Noam Chomsky's Theories on Language became more excepted than behaviorism. His views are that humans aren't born as a blank slate and only learn through experience, and instead basic things are encoded in our DNA. Namely where language is concerned.
