The Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau helped newly freed African's Americans by providing education, housing and health care. The Radical Republicans tried to expand the Bureau but Johnson Vetoed the bill. -
The Civil War Is Over
General Robert E. Lee finally surrendered marking the end of the Civil war. The Union came out victorious. After the war ended the Reconstruction era began. -
Lincoln's Assasination!
Lincoln went to see a play and ended up getting shot. John Wilkes Booth snuck into the viewing area and shot Lincoln in the head. Lincoln died shortly afterwards. -
Andrew Johnson Becomes President
After Lincoln's tragic death Vice- Prsident Andrew Johnson becomes the new president. He was the 17th president of the U.S. -
John Wilkes Booth Killed!
John Wilkes Booth is finally tracked down. He was shot for assasinating President Lincoln. He dies at dawn the next day. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. African Americans were finally free of slavery. This amendment was a big step in the struggle for equal rights. -
Grandfather Clause
The Granfather clause was set up to allow poor and uneducated whites to vote without allowing poor and uneducated African Americans to. -
The Civil Rights Act
Th Civil Rights Act proclaimed that anyone born in this country was a citizen. It also said that no citizen could be discriminated against because of race or color. -
The KKK
The Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist group that targets African Americans. The group was founded on the 30th of July in 1866. This organization is still around today. -
Impeachment of Johnson!
On Feb 24th The Radicalsvoted to impeach Johnson. This was the very first impeachment in U.S. history. No one else would be impeached for another 130 years. -
14th Amendment!
This amendment grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. The amendment said any citizen had rights that couldnt be abridged. Many African Americans gained citizenship because of this amendment. -
Ulysses S. Grant Elected President!
Former Union General Ulysses S. Grant becomes the 18th president of the United States. Grant was a Republican. -
15th Amendment
This amendment granted African Americans the right to vote. Although this amendment was passed many states passed clever laws like the Grandfather clause so that Africans couldnt vote. -
Amnesty Act
This act pardoned most Confederates from the treason of seceding. It forgave a lot of southerners. -
Poll Tax
Poll taxes were a fee that people had to pay in order to vote. They were put in place so that poor African Americans could'nt vote. -
Literacy Test
Literacy tests were created so that uneducated African Americans could'nt vote. They were written tests and you had to be able to read to pass them. If you failed you could'nt vote.
