First Published Work
While still a student he took up an experimental and theoretical investigation of the surface tension by means of oscillating fluid jets. This work was published in the Transactions of the Royal Society, 1908. He carried out this work in his father’s laboratory and received a gold medal (the prize offered) at the Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen for this accomplishment. -
Theory for hydrogen atom
Proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom based on quantum theory that energy is transferred only in certain well defined quantities. Electrons should move around the nucleus but only in prescribed orbits. When jumping from one orbit to another with lower energy, a light quantum is emitted. Bohr's theory could explain why atoms emitted light in fixed wavelengths. -
Appointment
Bohr was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University. -

Concept of Complementarity
Bohr contributed by helping clarify some of the problems encountered in quantum physics, particularly by developing the concept of complementarity. He showed how vastly the changes in physics have affected fundamental features of our scientific outlook as well as how the consequences of this change would reach far beyond atomic physics and inevitably find its way in basic human knowledge.
