While Niels Bohr was attending graduate school at the academy of sciences in Copenhagen. He was awarded a gold medal, due to his insights into surface tension through experimentation utilizing oscillating Jet fluids. These insights were published in a scientific journal called "Transactions of the Royal Society.

In 1912 Niels Bohr was working alongside Ernest Rutheford. After Rutherford's gold foil experiments led to the discovery of the atomic nucleus. With the contributions from Rutherford, Bohr was able to craft a visual interpretation of of the structure of an atom, known as the Bohr Model.

The Bohr model indicates that electrons orbit perpendicular around nucleus similar to how planets would orbit the sun. Bohr also assisted in deducing that there are different energy levels in atoms and electrons could move between these levels. This would late play a role in the development of the Quantum theory.

In 1939 while working alongside John Wheeler, Bohr established the droplet model in order to better comprehend nuclear fissions. The model states that shooting a nucleus with a neutron, is similar to disrupting a droplet of water due to the similar surface tension created. As a result, this led to Bohr realizing the possibility of using fission to create large amounts of energy.
