Niels Bohr

  • Niels Bohr is born

Niels Bohr was born October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Christian Bohr and Ellen Adler. His father was a professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen, and his mother was a prominent Jewish banker. Christian Bohr was also nominated twice for the Nobel Prize. • Bohr starts his academic career

Growing up in a family of scientists, Bohr inevitably enrolled at the University of Copenhagen where his father taught, studying physics. • Bohr completes his education

Bohr studied at the Polytechnic Institute, which was leased to the University of Copenhagen. In 1911, Bohr achieved his doctorate with a dissertation on the electron theory of metals.
  • Niels Bohr gets married

Bohr happily married Margrethe Norlund on August 1, 1912 from which he had 6 sons. His fourth son, Aage N. Bohr, would later go on to share a third of the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics. • The Bohr Model

The Bohr Model was introduced in 1913 as a positively charged nucleus with protons and neutrons surrounded by a negatively charged electron cloud. These electrons orbit the nucleus in their atomic shells with different energy levels. The inner orbits having the lowest, and the outer orbits having the highest energy. https://youtu.be/S1LDJUu4nko?si=oEoD2PsARcvmvS9E
  • Bohr begins teaching at the University of Copenhagen

Bohr left his teaching position at Victoria University to finally settle at the University of Copenhagen in 1916 as a professor. Aaserud, Finn. “Niels Bohr | Biography, Education, Accomplishments, and Facts.” Encyclopedia Britannica, 20 July 1998, www.britannica.com/biography/Niels-Bohr.
  • First Nobel Prize

Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1922 for his work on the atomic model. “The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922.” NobelPrize.org, www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1922/bohr/facts.
  • The university's Institute of Theoretical Physics

In 1921, Bohr founded the university's Institute of Theoretical Physics. This institute served as a focal point for researchers into quantum mechanics in the 1920s and 30s. Some of the world's best known theoretical physicists spent time at this institute, including Hans Kramers and Oskar Klein. Bohr headed this institute for the rest of his life. “The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922.” NobelPrize.org, www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1922/bohr/facts.
  • Atoms for Peace Prize

Niels Bohr was chosen to be the first recipient of the Atoms for Peace Award, consisting of a gold mdeal and an honorarium of $75,000.
  • Niels Bohr dies

Bohr passed away on November 18 1962 of heart failure. 3 years later on what would have been his 80th birthday, the Institute for Theoretical Physicals was officially renamed to reflect the founder: the Niels Bohr Institute.
