Niels Bohr: 7 October 1885 - 18 November 1962

  • Bohr Model

In 1913, Bohr published the Bohr model, which is his model of the atomic structure. This structure depicts that negatively charged electrons orbit around a positively charged nucleus. His work on this subject lead to part of the basis behind quantum theory, eventually leading to his Nobel prize in 1922.

  • Nobel Prize

On the 11th of December, 1922, Niels Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics “for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them”. His research and theories on atomic stability and electrodynamic theory in the three papers he set out on the quantum theory of spectra between 1918 and 1922 led to this prestigious award.

  • Complementarity principle

Bohr announced his Complementarity principle. This controversial idea stated that measuring an atom with one apparatus would show the atom behaved like a particle, while measuring on another apparatus would show the atom behave like a wave. He went on to say that it did not matter how the atom was measured and that the observer must decide which way to measure the atom and accept the possibility of observing it differently. This posed a controversy in the philosophical idea of physics.

    Atom for Peace Award
In 1957, Bohr was awarded the Atoms for Peace award for his Peaceful Nuclear technology. During and after the Manhattan project, Bohr supported peaceful applications of atomic energy and openness between nations with regard to nuclear weapons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBgC0PyIomU
