Nic is born
Nic Sheff was born on July 20th 1982. David and Vicki were already buying clothes and toys for him. They thought he was going to be a normal, fun loving kid. But they didn’t know the road they were about to travel with this little boy. -
Parents Get Divorce
Nics parents get divorced and it causes disruption in the family. This causes Nic to go to two houses and live two different lives. This also allows Nic and Karen to develop a better relationship. -
Day at Lake Tahoe
Nic and his family are on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe. When Nics parents fall asleep Nic and one of his friends (Philip) start to experiment with alcohol. They drink rum, bourbon, gin, tequila, scotch and more. Nics parents were awakened to them two throwing up. This is significant because this was the drug that started it all. -
Nic trys marijuana
Nic tried marijuana for the first time. The symptoms were there, he was lazy and smelled like smoke. When David asked him why, he said everybody was doing it. This is the beginning of it all. -
Nic gets suspended
Nic gets suspended for buying marijuana on campus. This changed the view of Nics parents on him because they thought he was done with drugs and back on track. The dean gave him a second chance but one more time he's gone. -
Nics addiction grows
Nic is becoming less and less himself. He is becoming lazy, not doing his school work and being just plain stupid. Marijuana is effecting his body and not in a good way. His family starts noticing and hopefully it’s not too late. -
Nic gets arrested
Nic gets arrested for not appearing to his court date for his possession of marijuana. He gets arrested in front of Jasper and Daisy and it traumatizes them. This was the point in the book where everything got real, and the reality set in. -
Nic has tried crystal meth
Nic trying crystal meth is a huge part in this book. This drug is the worst gateway drug, and nic says it makes him feel alive and doesn’t want to live without it. Then David finds out that Nic used even after he promised he wouldn’t, decreasing the trust he had for Nic. -
Nic relaspes
Nic relapses just a month after graduating from the hospital. This shows that his parents can’t trust him by himself. Also it makes them see the reality of the situation and if Nic stays on this pace where he’s going to end up. -
Nic is sent to rehab
Nic has been forced to go to rehab. Nic then stops answering David’s calls and soon disappears. This is the event where Nics parents start getting paranoid. They start thinking Nic is in the hospital or dead. -
Nic steals from Jasper
Nic breaks into his own family's house. Nic steals eight dollars from Jasper. It goes to show that an addict will do anything to get their drugs; including stealing from their loved ones. This crosses the line to anything Nic has done and I believe it shocked everybody. -
Nics gets a girlfriend
I feel like this was a big event because she encouraged him to do more drugs. When he was starting to stop she would encourage him to do more. Then they broke up causing Nic to fall into a state of depression. In this state he used more and more, experiencing a near death experience. -
Nic relaspes after 18 months sober
After 18 months sober Nic relapses. Everything that he had been working for was gone just like that. He was on a great road to recovery and one mistake may have ruined it all. This event caused the loss of trust in his family. -
Nic lies to David
Nic lies about his whereabouts to his father. When Nic lied David realized how manipulative Nic has been over the past years. It finally hit David that Nic hasn't changed and this has always been Nic. -
Family reunion
Nic, David and Vicki meet up for the first time in years. They go through many exercises to improve their relationships. It’s a bonding period and they all enjoyed it. After this they go back to living life and Nic seems to be on the right side of the road now.
