When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor their main idea was to destroy the American fleet so it coulcn't stop their operations in the Pacific. The Japanese missed two major taargets that could have crippled the Americans. These targets were the American aircraft carriers, which were out on training exercises, and the fleet's oil tanks.
