Judiciary Act of 1789
Created a judicial structure that has remained essentially intact. Supreme court consisting of chief justice and 5 associate justices. It also set up 3 federal citcuit courts and 13 federal district courts throughout the country. Allowed state court decisions to be appealed by federal court if constitutional issues were raised. -
Whiskey Rebellion
1794, farmers in Pennsylvania refused to pay tax. Hamilton looked at the whiskey rebellion as being a way to show that the federal gov't could enforce the law along the western fronteir. -
Marbury vs. Madison
This case established the concept of Judicial Review or the ability of the Judiciary branch to declare a law unconstitutional. -
Texas Joins the Union
Sam Houston invited Texas to join union and become part of the US. Texas becomes 28th state in Union -
Kearney Marches West
Polk sends Stephen Kearny to march from Kansas to NM as part of plan to get NM and CA. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande border for Texas and the US got NM and CA for $15 million. -
Gadsden Purchase
Occured 5 years after treaty of guadelupe hildago. Established more territory for US south of Gila river
