Civil War Ends
After 4 years a heavy loses on both sides the Union beats the confederacy. This starts the period of American reconstruction where the south rebuilds and the Union tries to reunite with the south. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
Lincoln is assinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play in Ford Theatre. Booth decided to assainate Lincoln when he heard that Lincoln was supporting blacks voting rights. -
Thirteenth Amendment is Adopted
This amendment to the United States Constitution officially abolished and prohibits slavery in the United States. -
Ku Klux Klan is Created
THe first KKK Klan is created by Veterans of the Confederate Army in Pulaski, Tennessee. The was an extremeist or terrorist group that was against blacks, republicans and immagrants. -
Fourteenth Amendment is Adopted
This amendment gave overruled the Dred Scott v. Sanford case and gave blacks citizenship. -
First Transcontinental Railroad is Completed
Laborers from the Central Pacific railroad met with the Union Pacific railroad workers at Promontory Summit in Utah where a ceremony was held for the last spike to be driven in. It was the worlds first live mass media event sent by telegraph. -
Fifteenth Amendment is Ratified
This amendment states that any citizen dispite their, "race, color or previous condition of servitude," is able to vote and that right cannot be prohibited by the government. -
Great Chicago Fire
A fire in Chicago, Illinois that is spread 4 square miles. To this day the exact cuase of the fire is still not known but it is said to be one of the largest disasters of the 19th century. -
Battle of the Little Bighorn
Also known as Custer's Last Stand, a decisive win for the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes over the 7th Calvary Regiment of the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, fought in eastern Montana Territory. -
Compromise of 1877
The Compromise of 1877 was a compromise between the north and south during the reconstruction period that stated that the north would remove its troops from the south, Hayes' would have to appoint at least one southern democrat to his cabinet, another transcontinental railroad in the south, and the the legislation would help the south industrialize. -
Great Railroad Strike of 1877
This strike went on for about 45 days where railroad workers would block trains froming moving. The strike stopped by federal troops and left over 100 men dead. -
Dedication Ceremony for the Statue of Liberty
The Staue of LIbery was a gift to the United States from the people of France. Former governor of New York, Grover Cleveland, presided over the event. -
Wounded Knee Massacre
The U.S. 7th Calvary Regiment began open firing on a Lakota encampment while attempting to disarm them, killing over 150 men woman and child and injuring over 50, some of whom died later from their injuries. -
U.S.S. Maine Sinks
The U.S.S. Maine mysteriosly explodes and sinks in Havana Harbor, Cuba. To this day it is still a mystery as to the cause of the explosion but at the time the U.S. blamed it on Spain. -
Spanish-American War Begins
The two main causes that America declared war on Spain were in hoep of attaining its colonies in the Caribbean, especially Cuba, and most people in the U.S. believed that Spain had something to do with the mysterious sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor. -
Spanish-American War Ends
The Spanish-American War resulted in an American victory, so as a result of the peace treaty we received the Phillipines, Guam and Puerto Rico from Spain for $20 millon. -

The NAACP is founded which later becomes one of the most influential civil rights groups in the U.S. -
World War I Begins
Fighting in Europe that included all of the world's super powers at the time that was primarily cause by the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. -
Panama Canal is Opened
The Panama Canal made travel by boat from the west coast to the east coast much easier and faster for boats would no longer have to go all the way around South America. -
The U.S. Declares War On Germany
President Woodrow Wilson declares war on Germany because of the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman note. -
World War I Ends
As a result of World War I the Allies won and split up the Central Powers land and the League of Nations was created. -
Eighteenth Amendment is Ratified
The eighteenth amendment made "intoxicating liquors," which where speficified in the Volestead Act, illegal. This started a time period in the United States as Prohibition. -
Nineteenth Amendment is Passed by House of Representatives
This amendment finally gaurenteed woman's suffrage. The government can no longer deny people the right to vote based on their sex. -
Treaty of Versailles is Signed
One of the many Treaties signed after WWI that stated that Germany had to pay reparations for the war and make large territorial concessions.
