• The Japanese Army invades Manchuria – [“Manchurian Incident”].
The Japanese invasion of Manchuria began on September 19, 1931, when Manchuria was invaded by the Kwantung Army of the Empire of Japan immediately following the Mukden Incident. The Japanese established a puppet state, called Manchukoku, and their occupation lasted until the end of World War II. -
• Mussolini (Italy) conquers Ethiopia.
Italy conquers Ethiopia through overwhelming military force, revealing the ineffectiveness of the League of Nations and encouraging Mussolini’s exaggerated estimate of his nation’s military power. -
• General Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces take control of Madrid (Spain), where he rules until his death in 1975.
The regime was entrenched upon the victory in the Spanish Civil War of the rebel Nacionales coalition. -
• Britain’s Neville Chamberlain and Hitler meet at the Munich Conference.
In September 1938, Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister, met Adolf Hitler at his home in Berchtesgaden. Hitler threatened to invade Czechoslovakia unless Britain supported Germany's plans to takeover the Sudetenland. -
• Hitler (Germany) invades Poland, beginning WWII
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion. From East Prussia and Germany in the north and Silesia and Slovakia in the south, German units, with more than 2,000 tanks and over 1,000 planes, broke through Polish defenses along the border and advanced on Warsaw in a massive encirclement attack. After heavy shelling and bombing, Warsaw surrendered to the Germans on September 27, 1939.
