September 15, 1821: Nicaraguan Independence from Spain
Having witnessed the violence of other Latin American revolutions for independence, the Nicaraguan plan was to negotiate with the foreign entities in charge of the territory. Political leaders in the region came together and wrote the Act of Independence, which was submitted and recognized in September of 1821.

1823: Addition to the United Provinces of Central America
Nicaragua becomes apart of the United Provinces of Central America. It is comprised of other Latin American countries, like Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

1860: British Cede Control over the Caribbean coast to Nicaragua
The British signed a treaty that allowed them to gradually withdraw territories in Nicaragua.
