Christopher Columbus started his voyage to Nicaragua. It was his fourth and last voyage. He started May 11, 1502 and reached Santo Domingo on June 29th.

Dutch and British Fight Over Nicaragua.
I put Jan. 1 because the date is unknown. In 1668-70, English, Dutch, and French destroyed the city of Granada, center of the province's agricultural wealth. Spain didn't get control of the eastern half of Nicaragua. The British crown ended up taking Nicaragua as one of its protectorates

Economic Rivalry Between Leon and Granada
I put 1/1 since there is no specific date. In the 1750s, there was a rivalry between the landowners of Leon and Granada. These two cities fought over trade policies (free-trade vs. protectionist). This rivalry lasted into the 20th century and resulted in loyalty towards the party instead. -
Nicaragua gains independence
There were several stages for Nicaragua to get its independence. Guatemala separated from Spain then joined the Mexican empire. Then, they seprated from that and tried creating a federal govt., Finally, they declared independeence in 1838 -

After 35 years of calm in Nicaragua, Zelaya took over and modernized the country. -
Revolt Against Zelaya
The Nicaraguans revolted against Zelaya and overthrew him with the help of the US.

Somoza Family Starts Ruling
On New Years of 1937, Somoza García took control of Nicaragua's National Guard, and later became the dictator. His family ruled for 44 years. The Elections of 1947
It is significant because a member of the Samoza Family (General Somoza) was forced to resign, yet he still hand-picked the leaders of the national guard. I chose a scorpion to show that Somoza showed that he was not controlling anything, yet he was the puppetmaster of all the leaders of the national guard.

Luis Somoza Debayle becomes President
I don't know the date, therefore, I put 1/1/1956. General Somoza was assassinated, and then his son, Luis Somoza Debayle, took over as president. Formation of Sandinista National Liberation Front
I could not fine the date, so I put New Year's. My source was from a website called country quest. This event is significant because it is one of the first attempts to overthrow the Nicaraguan dictatorship, aka of the Somozas. Earthquake of 1967
The Earthquake killed 10,000 people, and injured many more. But the most significant part of this earthquake is the fact that Somoza and his government decided to keep a significant amount for themselves, which showed the corruption in this place.
