they were people who opposed slavery since before and during the civil war.They campained for freed blacks rights.It is dangerous for the reconstruction because they wanted to keep the black codes and still have the blacks be slaves to them in a more subtle way.

He is impeached because he passed the tenure of Office Act which prohibited the president form removing any executive department officer who had appointed by a previous president.Later that year he tried to stop military reconstuction by firing Edwin M Stanton(the secretary of war and a Radical Republican)and place someone who didnt inforce the law. -
