This man was educated, he was the first Democratic governor after Reconstruction, and part of the Bourban Triumvirate -
"New South"
This idea was made by Henry Grady. This idea was to make the South that would become much more like the Industrilized North. -
Alfred H. Colquitt elected govenor
GA's Governor during the Civil War. He eventually became Chief Justice of the GA Supreme Court and server in the U.S. Senate. He was also part of the Bourbon Triumvirate. -
John B. Gordon elected as governor
This man was part of the Bourbon Triumvirate, he fought for the Confederacy, led Georgia's KKK, served as a U.S. Senator, and served two terms as GA's governor. -
Populist Party formed
A short lived political party started by white southern farmers. During their time, they were only able to nomimate 1 member for president. -
Atlanta Compromise
Booker T. Washington spoke before predominatly white audience at the Atlanta Cotton Expo. By the end, he simply said that the south can not prosper without blacks. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
30 year old Homer rode in a "White only" car. He was only 1/8th black but because of his skin color, he was arrested. This eventually led to the supreme court where they ruled that Homer could not sit in the "White-only" section. Seperate but Equal. -
Niagara Movement Speech
This speech was made by W.E.B. DuBois where he disagree about the Atlanta Compromise. He talked about political and social equality by 5 reasons in his speech. -
Atlanta Mutal Insurance Company
Alonzo Herndon was a wealthy African American who owned a succesful barber shop. In 1906 be bought a life insurance company on Sweet Auburn Avenue. The company wanted to make it easier for blacks to protect themselves. -
Atlanta Race Riot
The Atlanta Race Riots of 1906 were started because of growing tension between the whites and the African Americans. The whites accused the blacks of abusing their women. In the end, there were 25-40 African Americans dead and 2 whites dead. -
Grandfather Clause
Part of the Jim Crow laws that were made to disenfranchise African Americans. It made it so only 3rd Generation, white men who owned land could vote. -
NAACP
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded by a few people that included W.E.B. DuBois. Their mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race based discrimination. -
National Urban League
The National Urban League was a network based organization that wanted to help African Americans migrate to the north and get jobs. -
People vs. Leo Frank
The death of a 13 year old girl made Leo Frank the main suspect since he was last seen with her. Leo got lynched in Marietta, Georgia. This case led to the rebirth of K.K.K. -
19th Amendment ratified
Gave every gender the right to vote. This still did not include African Americans. -
County Unit System
Gave rural counties more power to elect polititions than the rich larger counties. It was eventualy called " unconstitutional". -
18th Amedment
Prohibition of alcoholic beverages -
Rebecca Feltion elceted to Congress
Rebecca Felton tried to limit alcohol, improve prison condition, and wanted to help poor and lower middle class. She also advocated women sufferage.
