New River established
The New River Gorge National River is a unit of the United States National Park Service designed to protect and maintain the New River Gorge in southern West Virginia. Established in 1978, the NPS-protected area stretches for 53 miles from just downstream of Hinton to Hawks Nest State Park near Ansted. President Jimmy Carter signed legislature to establish the New River Gorge! -

Bridge Day
The first ever Bridge Day was held on this date. There were two parachutists that jumped from a plane onto the bridge. There were five parachutists that jumped from the bridge into the gorge. 5,500 certificates were given out to people taking the 3,000 foot walk across the bridge. -
20 Year Anniversary
20th Anniversary of the dedication of the Bridge & Bridge Workers’ Appreciation Day. Twelve BASE Jumpers leaped off the bridge to break the world record for a simultaneous jump. -
Bridge Day 2001
This was the only year Bridge Day was cancelled. It wa cancelled due to 9/11. On this date however, the first ever Taste of Bridge Day was held. -
Bridge was listed on the National Register Historic Places.

There was a record of over 200,000 people who attended Bridge Day, and there were over 450 base jumpers.
