Under the guidance of the 16th Karmapa, Ole and Hannah Nydahl established the first Karma Kagyu center in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1972. The movement is rooted in the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, emphasizing lay practice and meditation.

With assistance from the Nydahls, the 16th Karmapa visited Europe in 1974, which led to the founding of more centers across the continent.

The passing of the 16th Karmapa leads to a period of transition for the Karma Kagyu lineage. Ole Nydahl continues teaching and spreading the Diamond Way approach to Buddhism.
