BOER WAR(SOUTH AFRICAN WAR)
The Boer War split the country into two groups. This war caused a division along French-English lines. New gold and diamonds were discovered in South Africa. Because of that, Britain tried to take the control in Africa. Heir of early Dutch colonists are called Boers. They resisted the British advance and it led to a war. British government called on its colonies for support. French Canadians took Boer's side and they thought that Canada should not get involved in an unfair imperialist war. -
ALASKA BOUNDARY DISPUTE
American government was planning the new border between Alaska and Northwest British Columbia, Canadians united with Laurier. A lot of people were concerned about the exact location of the border. In 1897, the discovery of gold brought 100 thousand miners into Yukon. This became a problem for Canada.Laurier agreed to an International tribunal to solve this problem. Britain didn't want to do anything against American President. Britain voted in favour of America.Canada was in a terrible position. -
ALBERTA AND SASKATCHEWAN BECOME PROVINCES
Alberta and Saskatchewan used to be a part of Northwest Territories. The government wanted to change this because of the economy that had changed. There wasn't only fur trade anymore.There was also logging, mining and the railway. Many people were coming to work in these industries. And also they could not afford everything. By creating new provinces, they could collect taxes. -
NATIVE LAND CLAIMS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
First Nations have dealt with a lot discrimination. When a lot of people began to immigrate in British Columbia, this became an issue for the First Nations. They felt even more threatened. The federal government wanted to settle this by treaties. Treaties only covered a small area of British Columbia. -
ASIANS WERE ATTACKED DURING AN ANTI-IMMIGRATION RIOT
Many people came to British Columbia for the construction of the railway. When the railway was done, Chinese and Japanese immigrants were looking for other jobs.Canadians felt very threatened by that so they caused a huge violence. An anti-immigration rally exploded into violence and vandalism in both Chinatown and Japantown in Vancouver. -
THE TITANIC SINKS
1500 lives were lost forever with the unsinkable ship. The blame for the tragedy was found on the captain and bridge crew. There was a significant safety-improvement issues on the ship. There was not enough lifeboats on the ship compared to the number of the passengers. The sinking of the Titanic has become a legendary story. -
"LAST BEST WEST"
The Canadian government actively encouraged people to come to Canada. Canada Immigration Department attracted very many people to settle in the Western Canada by offering them free homestead lands. Millions of posters, newspaper ads, public lectures were used. All the things that would not attract settlers into Western Canada were banned to be shown or told on the advertising. -
THE INCREASE IN POPULATION
First great stream of European immigration includes large numbers of Japanese people, Chinese people, Germans, Hungarians, Norwegians, Swedes and Icelanders. The nation’s population had increased 43%. "Last Best West" have effected the population the most. After the advertisement a lot of immigrants came into Canada in a very short time. The government succeeded getting the attention that they wanted.
