Homestead Act Passed
This act was made to develop the American west and spur economic growth. This provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land. -

This act provided Federal government support for the building of the first transcontinental railroad, which was completed on May 10, 1869. -

A war party of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians attacked a Denver-bound freight wagon train killing thirteen men. -
Nebraska becomes a state
The Nebraska territory grew very fast because people from the North and from the South were coming there to make that state a free state, or a slavery state. -

This is where the United States recognized the Black Hills as part of the Great Sioux Reservation, set aside for exclusive use by the Sioux people. -
