In 1626 the first ordinance controlling sale of timber passed laws against burning forests. It is important because it decreased the amount of lumber. -
1700's and 1800's
Late 1700’s and early 1800’s preservation was centered around saving live oaks for building war ships. Caused a decline in the amount of oaks. -

In 1825 Erie Canal completed to connect the Great Lakes with the Hudson River. Caused a larger amount of transportation. -
1840
In 1840 the U.S. forests produced about a billion board feet of limber. Caused a decline in the amount of lumber. -
1875
In 1875 American Forestry Association organized to promote timber culture and forestry. Helped make more lumber avalaible. -
1900
In 1900 33 million acres of forest reserves. Made more land available for forestry. -
1914
Timber was needed for the war and thousands of soldiers were used to harvest it. Caused a decline in the amount of lumber. -
1920's
Late 1920’s Federal government bagan to assume some responsibility for flood control. Caused their to be less problems with flooding. -
1928
1928-First USDA soil conservation bulletin published “Soil Erosion-A national Menace.” Helped with soil conservation. -
1933
In 1933 Soil Erosion Service established in the Departement of Interior. Help with the management of conservation. -
1937
In 1937 President F.D. Roosevelt established soil conservation districts within the state. To help and manage the land. -
1939
WWII and post war house building created another expansion in the need for timber. Caused a decrease in timber. -
1954
In 1954 Watershed protection and flood prevention act made state and local. Helped protect us from floods, and watershed protection. -
1960's and 70's
In the 1960’s and 1970’s Federal legislation emphasized health concerns of waste water treatment. Caused their to be water shortages. -
1898
In 1898 Gifford Pinchot head of USDA forestry department. Helped save more forestry.
