    Dennis Banks

    Dennis was born on Leech Lake Indian Reservation April 12, 1937. He was sent to boarding schools where they did not allow him to speak his native language. Banks has an associates degree from the University of California, Davis. He taught at Stanford University and DQU. Dennis got involved in the movement because he wanted to show the American people that the government has a responsibility to Native Americans, so change would happen and also he was sick of his people being pushed around.

    Occupation of Alcatraz

    It was an occupation of the Alcatraz Island by all the Indian tribes. It lasted atleast 19 months, and was forcibly ended by the US. The Native Americans set out to occupy Alcatraz Island. Before they Occupied it, it was delcared a surplus federal property. The Native Americans tried to offer them the same amount that the government initially offered them, but when that didnt work they occupied the island.
