    Introduction to Nationalism
    Napoleon introduced nationalism to the German states and this contributed to the unification, therefore it is a positive event. Source is here
  • Prussia in Congress of Vienna

    When Prussia joins the Congress of Vienna, it gains more land which means more money and power. This is a benefit and is a positive effect because it's one of the reasons why Germany became unified. Source is here
  • Zollverein

    The Zollverein was established, and this took away the tariffs around Prussia for free-trading. This is positive because it improved the economy and helped with the unification of Germany. Source is here
  • Frankfurt Parliament

    Frankfurt Parliament
    Liberal nationalist created an all-German parliament in Frankfurt in 1848. This is positive because it attempted to create a national constitution for all German states which gives the states more say. Source is here
  • Johann Gustav Droysen: Speech to the Frankfurt Assembly

    Due to nationalism, Prussia wanted German unity to gain more power. In the eyes of Johann Gustav Droysen, this is positive because Prussia will then be the strongest German country instead of Austria. Source here
  • The Danish War

    Schleswig and Holstein were the borders of Denmark and the other Germanic countries. Denmark wanted control over Holstein, but Prussia and Austria oppose and war breaks out. Prussia and Austria win, and Denmark is forced by the Treaty of Vienna to surrender Schleswig and Holstein to the victors. This is positive because Prussia gets more land and power. Source is here
  • Seven Weeks War

    The Seven Weeks War was to unify the German Confederation under Prussia which was under the control of Austria at the time. Prussia isolated Austria from any allies and Prussia allied itself with Italy. Prussia got Austria to declare war on it, and Prussia won in a war that only took seven weeks, hence the name. This is a positive event because Prussia got more German states unified which is the goal. Source is here

  • Purpose of Kulturkampf Speech

    Bismarck sets up the Kulturkampf to control the Catholic Church, not to opress it, but because there is a power struggle between them (the church and government/royalty). In actuality though, Bismarck found them as in obstacle in the way of his goal. This event is a negative because Kulturkampf failed, and he needed the enemy on his side. Source is here
  • Nationalist Speech by Otto van Bismarck

    Otto van Bismarck gave a speech to a group of students on his 80th birthday. He says that nationalism in Germany during the unification helped them gain their independence. Bismarck wants nationalism to continue for the good of the future of the country, so nationalism is positive in this case.
