Starting in 1825, Nat Turner claims he received visions from God. His first vision occurred after he ran away and encouraged him to return to slavery. It was at this point that he decided he needed to attack slavery from within the system.

Turner was found hiding in the forest of the Dismal Swamp area. He was taken to the Southampton County Jail.

Read the ConfessionsWhile in jail, Turner was interviewed by Thomas Gray, a local lawyer. Gray was the lawyer for other slaves who were charged with the rebellion. He also interviewed witnesses and survivors of the rebellion. Gray published his interviews and writings on the rebellion just weeks after Turner was executed. Within months, it sold over 50,000 copies.

Nat Turner was hung in Jerusalem, VA after a trial in which he was convicted and sentenced to death.
