  • The Coup D'etat

    The Coup D'etat
    On November 18, 1799, Napoleon overthrew the Directory Government. When they abolished the Directory Government, they created the Consulate Government and Napoleon was named the first consul. This can be viewed as a political accomplishment.
  • Establishment of the Consulate

    Establishment of the Consulate
    The Consulate government was established November 10, 1799 and it was abolished when Napoleon later names himself Emperor. The Consulate Government consisted of three consuls, but the first consul, Napoleon, has almost all the power. This was a political achievement for Napoleon very early in his reign of power.
  • The Bank of France

    In January of the 1800's the Banque de France (bank of france) was created, while under Napoleon's rule. This was created to restore financial trust in the French banking system after the financial decline during the revolution. This was an accomplishment economically for Napoleon.
  • Battle of Marengo

    Battle of Marengo
    On June 14, 1800, the battle of Marengo took place in Marengo Plain. Napoleon brought approximately 28,000 troops. Austria brought about 31,000 troops. Towards the end of the battle the French start to close in on the Austrains, which resulting in the loss of many of their lives. This was a major French victory that helped secure Napoleon's power, this is viewed as a major military achievement.

    Lycee's are an upper level secondary school preparing young boys for the baccalauréat. The first Lycee was established in 1801 when Napoleon was the first consul. Lycee's normally enrolled the nation's most talented students in a instructional course for seven years. This was a social success for Napoleon because he was improving the schools.

    In July of 1801, Napoleon made peace with the Church by declaring Catholicism as the religion of the majority of France. In exchange, the Pope of France agreed that all land stolen from the church did not need to be returned to France. This was a major social achievement for Napoleon.

    In April of 1803 France sold the Louisiana territory to the United States. France received $15,000,000 for the Louisiana territory. This was a success for Napoleon because it was his decision to sell this piece of land to the United States. He did this because he needed more money for the French people. This is viewed as a economic success for France.

    On March 21, 1804, Napoleon codified his own set of laws. He named it Code Napoleon but it was also called Civil Code. When he did this, he did away with three hundred plus legal systems of France and abolished the use of Feudalism. This was a political success for Napoleon.

    The coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of the French took place on December 2, 1804. Napoleon invited the Pope of France to the ceremony, and to crown him Emperor, to emphasize the legitimacy of his coronation. During the ceremony when the Pope was going to crown Napoleon, he took the crown and placed it on his own head. This completely unvalued the Consulate. This was a social success for Napoleon.

    Battle of Austerlitz
    On December 2, 1805 the battle of Austerlitz took place near Austerlitz in Moravia.Napoleon's 68,000 troops defeated nearly 90,000 troops from Russia and Austria.They decided to fight Napoleon west of Austerlitz and hid at the Pratzen Plateau, which Napoleon had purposely evacuated to create a trap. Austria and Russia lost 15,000 men killed and wounded and 11,000 captured, while Napoleon lost 9,000 men. This is viewed as one of Napoleon's greatest military victories.

    On July 5, 1806, the Battle of Wagram was fought on the Marchfield. Napoleon brought about 154,000 soldiers and Austria brought about 158,000 soldiers. The Austrians were spread out along a 14 mile piece of land waiting to attack the French army. Napoleon decided to attack before the Austrain's could predict it. Napoleon needed this military victory ending the feud between France and Austria.

    In November of 1806, Napoleon designed a blockade called the Continental System. The Continental System blocked Great Britain from trading with France and French allies. The Continental System hurt the English industries and damaged regions dependent the British manufacturing. This did stimulate some manufacturing France. This was a Economic success for Napoleon.

    Napoleon should be remembered for his multiple military successes. As well as his success as the Emperor of France. Even though Napoleon didn't know that much about running a country, he did an exceptional job for himself and the people of France. As much as Napoleon wanted power and success for himself, he also wanted to turn France around and return it to it's former glory.
