Coup d'etat
In 1799 after returning from Egypt; Napoleon seized power in France. He surrounded the National Legislative Building with his troops and forced most of the lawmakers out. The rest of the lawmakers voted him the ruler of France. Napoleon then became the dictator of France. -
Napoleonic Code
This set of laws and rules was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804. These rules dealt with property, colonial affairs, family and individual rights. These rules were not very progressive they stripped women of any rights they had. Established the man as the head of household and reestablished slavery in French Colonies. -
Concordat of 1801
This event was a meeting between the Catholic Church and Napoleon. This meeting reestablished the Catholic Church as the Church of france. This agreement between the Pope and Napolean gave the Church and France certain rights. This made most of the population happy because they were mostly Catholic. -
Loss of American Territories
In 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte decided to sell the Louisiana Territory that they had in the Americas to the Americans. On April 30th of that year the French and the Americans came to the conclusion that the Americans would buy the territory for $11,250,000. The most probable reason that the Napoleon sold the territory was Frances horrible economic situation. -
Napoleon Crowned as Emperor
On December 2, 1804 Napoleon crowned himself emperor of France. This drastic move was supported by the French Voter. He walked down the aisle at Notre Dame Church in Paris and in front of the Pope placed the crown on his own head. This right was usually done by the church but Napoleon doing it himself signaled that he thought he had more power than the Church. -
Conquering of Europe
Resulting from the Monarchies in Europe's revolt against the new french government they declared war on france to reestablish the king to hist throne. Over the next 10 years France under Napoleon slowly conquered more and more territory in Europe. -
Continental System
This was a blockade set up by Napoleon to weaken England. This blockade cut off most trade to England. This was set up with the support of Berlin and Milan. -
French Invasion of Russia
After France captured tons of territory in Europe, Napoleon got greedy and decided to try and invade Russia. It was a disaster within 6 months almost all of France's forces were wiped out. They cause, hunger, cold, disease and small Russian attacks. -
Battle of Waterloo
In 1814 Napoleon was exiled but he made a return in 1815. This battle was the final defeat of Napoleon by England. After this he was exiled again. -
The Hundred Days
The Hundred Days occurred after Napoleon returned after his first exile. He returned from Elba where he was exiled and took control over the government. His hundred days ended when he was defeated at Waterloo.
