Napoleon becomes a general in the French army
After defeat of the British at Toulons, Napoleon was promoted to general. -
Campaign in Italy
The Directory appointed Napoleon to lead the French army against Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia. With his army he swept through Italy and won a serious of remarkable victories. -
Campaign in Egypt
Napoleon led an exhibition to Egypt where he could not win like he did in Europe. Once he returned from Egypt, he was urged by his friends to seize political power. 1798-1801 -
concordat
Napoleon signed the concordat with Pope Pius VII. This established a new relationship between the church and state. The concordat gained Napoleon support of the organized Church as well as a big part of the French people. -
First Consul for Life
Napoleon proclaimed himself as First Consul for Life. This was after he overhauled French law. -
Napoleonic code
What Napoleon believed to be his greatest work. This gave the country a uniform set of laws and eliminated many injustices. The only thing was it limited liberty and promoted order and authority over individual rights. -
"Emperor of the French"
In the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, a pope was waiting with a beautiful crown. Napoleon walked down an long isle, took the crown and placed it upon his own head. -
Battle of Trafalgar
This was Napoleon's one major loss in his drive for a European empire. This loss ensured the supremacy of the British navy for the next 100 years. Also, it forced Napoleon to give up his plans of invading Britain. -
Continental system
Napoleon tried to accept this by by sending an invasion through Spain. He removed the Spanish king and put in his own brother. This scared Spanish people and made people called guerrillas attack French armies. 1806-1807 -
Campaign in Russia
Napoleon continued trying to take over different places and continued to Russia. He was met by a strong Russian force and was defeated. -
Defeat at Battle of Leipzig
After one of Napoleon's losses, he tried to get an army to fight another war. Most of the troops were not trained, and ill for battle. He went up against the allied armies of the European powers. Napoleon and his weak army were easily defeated. -
Elba
After Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Leipzig, the victors banished Napoleon. He was banished to a tiny island off the Italian coast called Elba. He stays here until he gets new of Louis' troubles -
St. Helena
After the Hundred Days Napoleon lost his power. This British did not want to take any chances, so they shipped him to St. Helena. This is where he lived the remainder of his life. -
Waterloo
Napoleon returned to France from Elba when he heard Louis was having trouble. When he arrived he became emperor and prepared for battle near the village of Waterloo. The British fought and then Prussian forces came and teamed up and defeated Napoleon's troops. -
Death of Napoleon
After living alone for six years, Napoleon died of stomach ailment. This also might of been cancer, but it is not known.
