Two years after he became a general, the Comittee of Public Safety named him a Brigadier General. -
Napoleon Becomes Commander of the French Armies In Italy
There, he won a series of battles and he became famous for speed, suprise, and decisive action. He defeated the armies of the Papal states and their Austrian Allies. -
Napoleon Returns To France a Hero
Napoleon suggested striking indirectly at Britain by taking Egypt. -
British defeats naval French forces
They defeated Napoleons army. Napoleon abandoned his army and fled to Paris. -
Coup D'etat
Napoleon took part in this and overthrew the Directory. He took leadership and set up the consulate. It was a republic, but Napoleon held the power. He was first called Consul. In 1802 he becane the consul for life. Two years later he crowned himself Emperor Napoleon I. -
Catholic Church
This year he agreed with the Catholic Church that the majority of France practiced catholicism as their religion. The church was no longer an enemy of the church. -
Civil Code
Also called the Napoleonic Code It preserved many of the same principles that the revolutionaries fought for. Equality, Right of an individual to chose a proffession, religious toleration, & the abolition of many serfdoms still left. -
