Creation of the Napoleonic Code
It was the main influence on the 19th-century civil codes of most countries of continental Europe and Latin America. Under the code all male citizens are equal: primogeniture, hereditary nobility, and class privileges are extinguished; civilian institutions are emancipated from ecclesiastical control; freedom of person, freedom of contract, and inviolability of private property are fundamental principles. -
Napoleon crowns himself emperor.
Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor and made Josephine Empress. His coronation ceremony took place on December 2, 1804, in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. -
Defeat in Russian Campaign
Napoleon went on a march in Moscow, the city where the Russian were at, they left. This led to Napoleon suffering a defeat because of his army facing starvation and cold weather. -
Battle of Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo, in which Napoleon's forces were defeated by the British and Prussians, marked the end of his reign and of France's domination in Europe. The French loss at Waterloo was a direct result of Napoleon's own leadership blunder and inferior methods of warfare. -
When he was exiled
Exiled to the island of Elba, he escaped to France in early 1815 and raised a new Grand Army that enjoyed temporary success before its crushing defeat at Waterloo against an allied force under Wellington on June 18, 1815. Napoleon was subsequently exiled to the island of Saint Helena off the coast of Africa.
