    Napoleon Bonaparte was the fourth, and second surviving, child of Carlo Buonaparte, a lawyer, and his wife, Letizia Ramolino. After his father had switched alligence to France, he was appointed assessor of the judicial district of Ajaccio in 1771. A plush job that eventually enabled him to enroll his two sons, Joseph and Napoleon, in France's College d'Autun.

On February 26, 1815, Napoleon managed to sneak past his guards and somehow escape from Elba, slip past interception by a British ship, and return to France. After returning to France, he took back control and ruled has emperor for about 100 days (Cuerard 91).

    Napoleon was subsequently exiled to the island of Saint Helena off the coast of Africa after the loss of the Battle of Waterloo. After about 6 years on the island, he died of the same disease as his father did, stomach cancer. In 1840 his body was returned to Paris, where it was interred in the Hotel des Invalides (Schlesinger 56).
