Dr. Nancy Cartwright was born in Pennsylvania. Dr. Cartwright is a noted Professor of Philosophy, specifically Analytical Philosophy. In 1983 while a professor at Stanford University, she and her colleague and future husband idealized a new philosophical approach called Entity Realism. -

Shortly after receiving her Ph.D., Dr. Cartwright began her professional career as a professor. She started off as an assistant at the University of Maryland before becoming an assistant then full professor at Stanford University and remained there until 1991. During her tenure at Stanford she was also a visiting professor at Cambridge, UCLA, Princeton and U. of Pittsburgh. In 1991, Dr. Cartwright became a professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science. -

Sometime during her tenure at Stanford University, Dr. Cartwright met and married fellow professor Dr. Ian Hacking whom she co-idealized the philosophical approach known as Entity Realism. Dr. Cartwright subsequently divorced Dr. Hacking and later met and married Dr. Stuart Hampshire in 1985. Together they had two daughters: Emily Hampshire and Sophie Hampshire, along with two granddaughters: Lucy Charlton and Tabitha Cartwright-Spray. Dr. Stuart Hamphsire died on June 13th, 2004. -

The award was for her extremely broad work, covering areas as diverse as the philosophy of economics, the philosophy of quantum mechanics, and the history of logical positivism. In numerous books and articles, she has given trenchant insights on key philosophical topics such as causality, powers, measurement, laws of nature, models, and evidence.
