  • Laos Becomes Independent

    Laos Becomes Independent
    Neigboring country Laos becomes Independent from France. French troop were finally out of the country with no influence on the country. Laos later became a factor to the Vietnam war and its location.
  • Battle of Dienbienphu

    Battle of Dienbienphu
    The Battle of Dienbienphu begins by French troops travlining along a rodaway and getting raided by Vietcong. The battle lasted until May 7 of the same year.
  • Geneva Confrence of 1954

    Geneva Confrence of 1954
    The convention and it's events lasted from April 26th to July 20th of 1954. The convention covered how Vietnam could be unified. It also covered how Indochina could be reunited so conflict wouldn't occur.
  • Communist Activity Rises

    Communist Activity Rises
    The date isn't official, but in 1957 communists activity starts to rise in South Vietnam. Guerrila soldiers assinate around 400 South Vietnam politial leaders and workers.
  • Group 559

    Group 559
    In North Vietnam, Group 559 was formed. The group were soldiers the were starting to infiltrate weapons and other supplies down the Ho Chi Minh trial. This was the first big recorded event of war supplies being mass transported.
  • Agent Orange

    Agent Orange
    The United States equips jets and other aircraft with Agent Orange. This is the first time in war hisrtoy this chemical wepondry was use. The agent burned the enemy and vegitation to not only kill them, but to tactically show enemy roads and other points of intrest from the heavy vegitation.
  • Battle of Kienhoa Province (Kien Long)

    Battle of Kienhoa Province (Kien Long)
    The United States and the South Vietnamese battled the Viet Cong at Kein Long from April 12th, to April 20th of 1945. The battle claimed a large amount of casulaties and unjuries, but was a landmark because the Viet Cong fought in the daylight and they fought as one army succesfully.
  • Tonkin Gulf Resolution

    Tonkin Gulf Resolution
    On August 4th, 1964 a few North Vietnamese torpedo boats off the Gulf of Tonkin attacked U.S. ships that were reporting intelligence to South Vienamese forces. Three days latter congress gave approval of fighting back in all necessary situations agianst the North Vienamese.

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    The operation was a bombing campain from march of 1965 to November 1968. The Second Air Division was behind the bombings of North Vienam. The division was later know as the Seventh Air Force The US Navy and South Vietnamese also aided the bombardments.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    A battle between North and South Vietnam with the Americans aiding South Vietnam. The battle was won by the Aliies because of thier technical tactics and use of modern technology.
  • Nixon's Vietnamization

    Nixon's Vietnamization
    After Nixon's being elected as preident in January of 1969 he came up with a term called "Vietnamization." Vietnamization meant that the U.S. wanted to stop North Vienamese influence on training South Vietnamese forces. This also fit Nixon's detente policy which meant we no longer were containing Communism but being world peace keepers or realists.
  • Kent State Shooting

    Kent State Shooting
    Students at Kent State had been protesting the Vietnam War and president Nixon's promise of backing out of Vietnam. There was a protest on May 4th that was planned to be at noon. The protest was planned to be at noon but was banned by law enforcement. Even with the ban, 2000 students showed up and it got out of control. Guards fired and killed 4 kids and wounded others.
  • 26th Amendment

    26th Amendment
    The 26th Amendment was passed so the voting age could not be set at a higher age then 18. It was influenced by recent student protests.
  • U.S. Final Withdrawl Of Troops

    U.S. Final Withdrawl Of Troops
    The last of the U.S. troops remaining in Vietnam are taken out of the country. The withdrawls started in July of 1969 but were gradual and slow, until the late March final departure of 1973.

    War Powers Act
    The War Powers Act was a used to check the President's Power. On October 24, 1973 President Nixon vetoed Congresses vote and wanted to go back to war and not get out. This act was enforced by Congress so the president couldn't be the only one commanding his army into battle.

    Scientific studies and speculation in Vietnam showed that all the chemicals dropped on the land was hurting crop growth terribly. It was not just the plants growing that year, it was going to be pretty long term.

    President Nixon announces that he is going to resign from being president. With his early August announcement Lydon Johnson became the president.

    Shortly before the total evacuation of Siagon, Genrald Ford says that Vietnam is over and is pretty much a lost cause. He said this to the public in New Orleans.
  • South Vietnam Surrenders

    South Vietnam Surrenders
    The South Vietnamese were pretty beat up in Saigon. There were a few battles around Saigon by the South Vietnamese 18th division with sucess, but the communists forces had more power and numbers than the South. The South Vietnamese did thier final surrender on April 30th 1975
