Seth Cortel's Media Exposure Timeline

  • Dynamic Loudspeaker

    Dynamic Loudspeaker
Though microphones were invented in 1876, dynamic loudspeakers were invented in 1920. Horns were widely used as amplifiers before the dynamic loudspeakers were invented. Microphones are somewhat useless without amplifiers, so when I was exposed to microphones, surely I was also exposed to amplifiers such as dynamic loudspeakers. Converted audio travel through these electric cable wires from the microphone. Once it reaches the loudspeaker, it is then converted back to audio output.
  • Radio

    Radio
During the 1900s, radios were already widely used usually in the army. However, dots and dashes were being trasmitted (known as the Morse code) instead of words and letters. Since I was born, I noticed that my dad uses his radio non-stop. At the right age, I listened to the radio with him during forenoon hours. Radiowaves travel in the air from radio stations, radios have these antennas that are capable of receiving these waves and converting them to audio output.
  • Television

    Television
The very first cathode ray tube television was invented by K. F. Braun in 1897. Since I was born, I was already exposed to this media as my parents would watch it day and night especially during the night time when news can be found almost in every channel.
  • Digital Camera

    Digital Camera
The Bauer S10 is believed to be the very first digital camera to be invented, costing approximately $1,600.00 each. It was first mentioned on 1990 but was marketed on 1991. I was exposed to digital cameras when I was young, I know because I have a picture of myself when I was less than a year old. I don't know who took a picture of me though.
  • Microphone

    Microphone
The microphone was invented by Emile Berliner in 1876 which was used as a telephone voice transmitter. Of course, the telephone was also invented in 1876. My mom took me to church almost every Sunday so that was why I was exposed to this kind of media in a very young age. Microphones transmit sounds through cable wires which can travel into speakers and amplifiers.
  • Newspaper

    Newspaper
The first dated newspaper is the one titled "Publick occurrences.", printed by R. Pierce for Benjamin Harris in 1690. It was intended to be issued monthly but was suppressed after its first issue. At an early age of 3, I was already being taught to read and write and sometimes I tried to read what my dad was reading in the newspaper. My mom also used newspaper for general cleaning purposes. Newspaper as a media pass information through encoded texts that are printed and undergoes duplication.
  • Book

    Book
Books already dated back about 2400 BC which were written in thin strips of Papyrus plants pressed together; known as papyrus scrolls. Papyrus scrolls originated in Egypt and historians believe that papyrus scrolls could have dated back as early as 3100 BC. I noticed the existence of books when a world almanac was introduced to me by my father so I can learn and practice how to read at a young age. Books pass down information like newspaper does, printing and duplication processes.
  • Chalkboard

    Chalkboard
Chalkboards arose in U.S. Military schools in 1801. Before chalkboards were invented, students had individual hand held slates that teachers had to write mathematical equations in. Prior to reading, I was also taught to write. We already had a chalkboard in the house and my mom and dad would teach me how to write from time to time. Information was passed to me through this media. Chalkboards are capable of passing information by writing on a bigger scale for the rest of the people to see.
  • Mail

    Mail
On 1775, Benjamin Franklin helped establish the U.S. postal system by the Second Continental Congress. There is no clear record of the very first mail in history. I can still remember my mom and dad receive and read mails from my aunt. After reading mails, they'd write back to them. Mail usually arrives 2 to 4 months after being sent from our place to theirs.
  • Game Console

    Game Console
The first video game console emerged in 1972 as a bulky rectangular brown wooden box with two attached controllers, and thus named as "Brown Box". My cousins from Manila brought a game console to my place. It was the very first time I saw something like it. I was amazed at it and it brought entertainment to all of us.
  • Desktop Computer

    Desktop Computer
One of the very first desktop computers ever to be developed was the Apple Computer I or Apple-1 developed by Steve Wozniak in 1976. I was already introduced to a private desktop when I was young, I even played a lot of games that were saved on CDs. For me, it taught me more on how to speak English more together with television. For me computer games and watching television taught me more about grammar and English rather than the traditional books. Computers project information in the screens.
  • DVD Player

    DVD Player
It was on 1986 that DVD Players actually bloomed because this was the time that the Japanese were urged by Warner Home Video to develop these optical disc technology. In relevance to watching movies, my uncle introduced me to a DVD Player when I was 5. I can still remember watching the iconic movie Toy Story using this DVD Player.
  • Projector

    Projector
The Overhead Projector was first built in the 1960s. It was the very first type of projector I have encountered. A transparent sheet with written output on it can be placed on the overhead source of light which noveys the written output into a wall or screen using the lamp and optics built into the projector.
  • Typewriter

    Typewriter
The first typewriter to be commercially successful was invented on 1867 and made a debut on 1868. Typewriters have already made a great impact on many people's lives as it increases performances on publications of formal letters. I first encountered a typewriter when my dad taught me to use it. He told me to study it's proper handling so I may handle a desktop computer a lot better.
  • Portable Computer

    Portable Computer
The portable computers made its debut in 1981, the first portable computer is the Osborne 1 which costs $1,800.00. I was exposed to this kind of media when my uncle brought his laptop. He taught me how to type and use Microsoft Word.
  • Telephone

    Telephone
Invented by Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray in 1876 prior to the invention of the microphone. I was exposed to the telephone when I was in Manila. May aunt had a telephone there. Telephones can transmit sound through electric cables or through radio waves.
  • Mobile Phone

    Mobile Phone
Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone in (1973). Martin Cooper made the very first mobile phone. I was exposed to these during my trip to Manila. I never had one in my life but my aunt gave me one. Mobile phones is the most common media in the present years, information can be passed easily through the internet and messaging.
  • Handheld Game Console

    Handheld Game Console
The world's first cartridge-based handheld game console was released in 1979 by Milton Bradley. However, the world's first handheld electronic game console with a color LCD display was released by Lynx in 1989. I first time I saw these game consoles was when I saw my classmates play PSP, an over rated handheld game console. Handheld gane consoles can pass information to the user, usually just for entertainment.
  • Walkie-Talkie

    Walkie-Talkie
Walkie-talkies are handheld, portable, two-way radio transceiver. The first made walkie-talkie was in 1937 just before World War II. I was exposed to this when my classmates bought toy walkie-talkies that could actually transmiy sound and audio through radio waves.
  • Photocopier

    Photocopier
A photocopier is a machine that duplicates documents and other files. The first photopier is the Xerox 914, it was introduced in the market in September 16, 1959. The Xerox 914 was named after its ability to duplicate sizes of originals up to 9 inches by 14. Projects didn't just end up being printed, sometimes our projects had to be duplicated too. Duplication is a fast way of creating copies of an original file rather than printing over and over the same file.
  • Printer

    Printer
An adjustable mold printer was developed by Johannes Gutenberg in 1438. However, the Gutenberg's Bible was completed in 1455 by his creditor Johann Fust and his own workman Peter Shoeffer. I encountered printers during the times where projects from the school had to be encoded and printed. Printing makes hard copies of an encoded original, it writes on a kind of paper using ink jets that moves with the system programming.
  • Touchscreen Gadgets

    Touchscreen Gadgets
Although touchscreen gadgets may seem like something that was invented just recently, think again. The first finger-driven touchscreen was invented in 1965 by E.A. Johnson. Touchscreens are actually a layer of different technical panels under the durable hard glass. I first encountered touchscreen gadgets when my classmate took his phone to school. I even dropped his phone on the ground by accident.
  • Social Media

    Social Media
The first recognizable social media site was Six Degrees which was invented in 1997. The first social media that I have encountered was the Facebook. Facebook was invented on 2004 but it wasn't open for the public until 2006. The reason I engaged in social media was that it had a lot of online games. It was the time when I got addicted to online gaming. Social media passes information at great speeds and allows interactions between different people.
  • Internet

    Internet
The internet predecessor is the ARPANET. In 1965, two computers at MIT Lincoln Lab communicate with one anoyher using packet-switching technology. I encountered the internet when I first got addicted to online games. Internet is one of the number one sources of media in which Leonard Kleinrock was credited for the initial concept which he developed into the World Wide Web (www). The internet is the greatest source of information because many archives are already linked to the internet.
