The Premission Slip
Maya's homeroom teacher is handing out premission slips for an all school dance Maya almost doesnt take one. She doesnt think her parents will allow her to go to the dance. Maya takes a premission slip anyway when Marcia Egness hands them out. Even though she takes she still thinks about throwing it away. -
The Big Move
Maya and her family are from Kazahstan but moved to America. They made the big move because Mayas aunt was in an international dating magazine. After Mayas Grandmother died her aunt started reading dating magazines. She eventually met Bob Campbell and then moved to America to marry him. She kept begging Maya and her family to move to America and eventually they decided to move. -
"Your'e wanted in the office."
During English class Maya is called to the front office. Maya is a good student so she isnt sure why she is being called to the front office to speak to the principal. When she gets to the office she learns that her younger brother, Nurzhan, got into a fight at his school. She is asked to contact her father because he only speaks little english. She learns that neihter of the boys were seriously hurt. -
The Green Cab
Maya watches out of the principals window along with her brother as her papas green cab turns the corner. Maya and her brother watch as their father steps out of the cab and enters the school. Maya isnt sure what is going to happen next. It was only a minute before he was standing in the office. He sat down at the desk as Mr. Shanaman began to talk. -
Translating
Maya is asked to translate for her Father because he doesnt speak much english. She changes some of the things that are said in order to keep Nurzhan from getting into too much trouble. She was supposed to tell her father that Nurzhan was involed in a nasty fight but instead she told him that he was in a little fight. She continues to change what is said in order to protect Nurzhan. -
The ride home
No one talked during their ride home. Maya thinks about about wheather her father is going to find out that she changed what Mr. Shanaman said. Maya begins to feel afraid about changing the things that were said.As they pull into their yard and he turns off the cab he turns around and narrows his eyes. -
