The colonial soldiers were outnumbered and forced to retreat. When the British moved on to Concord, they were met 500 minutemen and were defeated.

    Sam comes home after the Battles of Lexington and Concord and is excited to tell of the victory.

    Father and Sam are on different sides of the war. They get into and argument that leads Father to kick Sam out of the house. This is a man versus man conflict.

    Sam steals the Brown Bess from Father. This adds to the tension between Sam, Father, and the rest of their family. This is a man versus man conflict.

    British soldiers come to take the Brown Bess, but Sam still has it. They strongly believed that Father still had it, so they were beating him and restraining Mother.

    Tim decides to start secretly delivering spy letters to people from Mr. Heron. Tim's father did not want him to, but Tim disobeyed.
  • Conflict/Rising Action

    On their yearly tirp to Verplancks Point, Father and Tim are attacked by cowboys- twice. The first time they just steal a few items and injure Father. The second time Father is captured but Tim manages to escape by outsmarting them. The conflict in this part would be man versus man. It also adds to the Father versus Sam conflict because if Father had the Brown Bess, he may not have been attacked.

    Captain Betts, Mr. Rogers, and Jerry Sanford are captured by British toops that come to Redding. Next, the troops move to Captain Starr's house where Tim witnesses Captain Starr, Ned, and others being killed. He sees Ned's head being sliced clean off.

    Tim and Mother find out that Father and Jerry are dead. Father was ironically killed on a British prison ship even though he was captured by Patriots. Jerry also died on a prison ship from disease.

    On this day America and France signed the Treaty of Alliance. This was also the date of Sam's trial.

    People are stealing the Meeker's cattle but when Sam tries to stop them, they take him and tell officials that he stole his own cattle.

    Sam's trial was on February 6th, 1778. He was found guilty and was going to be executed. There was no way out of the situation. He would have been found guilty for stealing or leaving his post.
  • Resolution

    Tim went to Sam's execution. Sam was shot by a few soldiers that surrounded him then caught on fire. One of the soldiers had to shoot him again.
    This execution resolved all the tension between family members and such. Sam finally got what he unfortuately deserved.

    On October 19th, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered at the Battle of Yorktown which was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. It was a crushing defeat for the British. After this, they knew it was all over. American and French troops surrounded Cornwallis's weakened army.

    On this date the Treaty of Paris was signed, concluding the Revolutionary War. Britain finally recognized America as an independent nation, and were forced to leave.
