Kansas-Nebraska Act
Split into 2 territories; Kansas and Nebraska, let the decision of slavery up to the people. Led to Bleeding Kansas. Since residents of Kansas vote to decide the issue of slavery, settlers from both sides moved to Kansas territory. On voting day, 5,000 Missourians crossed the border to vote illegally. -

African Americans aren't identified as citizens, slaves are property. -
John Brown's Raid
Led a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia to get guns. Wanted to arm slaves and start a rebellion. John Brown later tried for treason and got hung. -
1860 election
Abraham Lincoln was elected, South Carolina was the first state to secede, next came Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. These states formed the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as their president. Lincoln did not intend to abolish slavery. His first act as president was to make secession illegal.
