Cuban Americans
Many Cuban's begin to leave Cuba for America after Fidel Castro became head of the Communist government. Once 78,000 left Cuba Castro banned more emigration, although it continued. Many had dangerous voyages to America. Most immagrints were professionals and business people, leaving Cuba for political reasons and not economic ones like many others. These people also wanted change in Cuba and not change in themselves.

Farm Workers Strike in Delano California
On September 8th in Delano California the National Farm Workers Association along with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta went on strike due to the low wages they were recieving for extremely hard labor. In order to recieve publicity activists and volunteers stood in front of grocery stores telling Americans not to buy grapes.

The Crusade for Justice Begins
Due to the belief that politics did little to help Mexican Americans, Rodolfo Gonzales, worked to promote Mexican American nationalism. The crusade for justice out of Denver Colorado worked to provide legal aid, theater for cultural awareness, a Spanish news paper, a community services, and bilingual classes for students. This movement has helped raise awareness for Mexican Americans and has helped them deal with discrimination they face in our country. citations: page -

Gun shots at the Rio Ariba County: Officers Wounded
Over the years Mexican Americans have been fighting to regain thousands of acres that have been taken from them throughout the years 60% of the land was taken away by the federal government. Due to this unrest a gun battle broke out in the county courthouse and two police officers were wounded. Boricua Movement Spreads to New York
Boricua expresses ethnic pride and support for poliyivsl activism. The Young Lords, a branch of Boricua, barricaded streets in New York City until the city promised to pick up trash in Puerto Rican neighborhoods more often. This organization also called for better healthcare, employment, and education through protests.

Mexican American protest for better education
The Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) founded by Gutierrez worked to force changes in education for Mexican Americans. Guiterrez helped organize a student protest in Crystal City, Texas were many of the high school students were mad about being distrimanited against. The protest worked for more Mexican American teachers, bilingual education, worked to better the condition of schools, and fair treatment of students. -
