The trip begins
Che and Alberto officially leave on their trip, heading for the San Pablo Leper Colony in Peru and going all the way to Caracas. (pg. 1) -
Córdoba
Che and Alberto leave Buenos Aires on motorbike and head for Córdoba. This is a test run before the larger trip to say goodbye to Che's girlfriend. (pg. 13) -
La Poderosa breaks down
Che and Alberto realize that their motorbike, La Poderosa, took too much damage from the accident and are forced to give it up in Chile. (pg. 44) -
Che and Alberto Fight Fires
The pair arrives in Santiago, Chile, and join the volunteer fire brigade which gives them a place to sleep and some extra money. (pg. 45) -
Che and Alberto meet the working couple
Che and Alberto meet a couple traveling for work in Chuquicamata, who have been blacklisted from the mine for being communists. Their struggles resonate deeply with Che and he embodies them as the proletariat struggle around the world. They later watch helplessly as the couple is separated for work in the copper mines. (pg. 59) -
Machu Picchu
The pair reaches the forgotten city of Machu Piccu. Here and in Cuzco, they meet several people who explain to them the history of exploitation by first the Spanish conquistadors and then the American capitalist corporations. (pg. 93) -
Meeting Dr. Pesce
Che and Alberto reach Lima and meet Dr. Pesce, who puts them to work at the library and teaches them some medical tactics for their trip to the Leper Colony. (pg. 120) -
Che's Asthma Attack
Che suffers a severe asthma attack on the boat to the Leper Colony, leaving him bed-ridden for much of the trip. (pg. 127) -
San Pablo Leper Colony
Che and Alberto reach the primary destination of their trip, the San Pablo Leper Colony. Here, they will treat patients that have been sent to Peru with leprosy. (pg. 132) -
Che and Alberto separate
After reaching Caracas, Che gets on a plane and leaves for Miami, leaving Alberto in South America. Years later, after Che has held his post following the Cuban Revolution, he would invite Alberto to study medicine on a permanent residence visa. (pg. 152)
