Japan Invades Manchuria
The invasion began when the Kwantung Army of the Empire of Japan invaded Manchuria after the Mukden Incident (also known as the Manchurian Incident). This invasion lasted for 5 months. The Japanes were victorious. -
Hitler Seizes Czechoslovakia
In 1938, Sudentenland was given to Hitler in agreement of the Munich Pact but they had little resources and all of Czechoslovakia was soon dominated by Nazi Germany. -
Nazi-Soviet Non-Agression Pact
This pact was a promise not to go to war with each other and a secret promise to invade Poland and split it between them. This pact was of course broken when Germany attacked the Soviet Union. -
Start of the War in Atlantic/European Theater
The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War 2 which was 5 years long from September 1st, 1939 until Germany's defeat in 1945. This battle was fought with U-Boats mainly. The war in Europe broke out when Germany invaded Poland, the UK and France had both agreed to protect Poland, the UK declared war on Germany on September 3rd, 1939. Canada had a big role in both of these including the Royal Canadian Navy in the Battle of the Atlantic. -
Canada Declares War on Germany
After Germany's invasion in Poland, the UK and France had already declared war on Germany earlier in September. At the time Canada was proving their independence from the UK and they waited until September 10th to join in and declare war on Germany as well. -
Miracle at Dunkirk
The Miracle at Dunkirk occurred when Allied troops evacuated the beaches of Dunkirk after being surrounded by German troops. The Germans made a decision to withdrawal from Dunkirk and Dunkirk was victorious because of this decision. -
Battle of Britain
Mostly fought in the air, Britain was victorious as the Royal Air Force was stronger than Germany's air force. The Royal Air Force was stronger because they had spent more time training, pilots were sent to Canada so they were safe to train. -
Operation Barbarossa
Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union with over 3million German armies. A large turning point in WW2 as it had failed. -
Pearl Harbor
When Japanese fighter planes attacked a naval base at Pearl Harbor, near Honolulu. It lasted two hours and was a great devastation. More than 2000 Americans died. The day after, FDR asked Congress to declare war on Japan. -
The Dieppe Raid
Allied troops raid the Germans in Dieppe, France. About 5000 Canadians were involved in this. The Allies failed and lost 3600 men, people say this raid was just a loss of lives but it helped for future fights. -
D-Day
The Battle of Normandy which ended in Allied liberation of West Europe from the control of Nazi Germany. About 156000 Canadians, British and American forces landed on Normandy. Has been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe. -
V-E Day
Great Britain and the USA both celebrate this day as the Victory in Europe Day. This day German troops put down their weapons all throughout Europe. -
Hiroshima
An American B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay dropped the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima which killed about 80000 people while 60000 more are killed later on from the effects. -
Nagasaki
America drops a 2nd bomb on Japan but in Nagasaki this time. This makes Japan unconditionally surrender. This killed approximately 60000 - 80000 people. -
V-J Day
Known as Victory over Japan Day when the formal surrender of Japan took place.
