Brighham Young wanted to make sure it would be a good place to practice their religion. This was the first non-native permanent settlement in Utah. -

The Utes, angry over the disruption of the trade as well as white settelment on their territory, reacted violently. They raided many Mormon villages. In responce the Utah militia attack the Utes. -
