The Kennedy's Disaster
On July 16th 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, and sister in law were killed when the airplane Kennedy is piloting crashed near Martha's vineyard. The plane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. Kennedy’s Piper Saratoga was on approach to Martha’s Vineyard when it made a series of turns and then fell from the sky at 9:41 p.m. -
Black Sludge Spill
On October 11th, 2000, 300 gallons of black sludge was peleased into the Mississippi River causing an environmental disaster. What caused this disaster was Massey energy company's dam collapesed near Inez, Kentucky, releasing the sludge. The spill destroyed 100miles of streams and killed millions of fish. Massey spent 77.9 million in clean up and 3.25 million in fines to the state of Kentucky. -
The Disaster of 9/11
September 11th, 2001, disaster strikes New York City with a terrorist attack. The terrorist's hijacked four American planes. American Airplanes flight 11 crashed into tower one of the World Trade Center at 8:50am. United Airlines flight 175 crashed into tower two of the World Trade Center at 9:04am. Only 14 minutes later than the first crash. Tower two collapsed at 10:00am, and Tower one collapsed at 10:30am. About 3,000 people died that day. Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the attack. -
Mapping of Mars
February 19th 2002, NASA's Mars Odyssey space probe began to map the surface of Mars, using it's thermal emission imaging system.The monitoring of seasonal changes on Mars from year to year and the most detailed maps ever made of most of the planet is being detected by the Mars Odyssey. It detected that Mars solar flares and cosmic rays are two to three times higher than around Earth. -
Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster
Space Shuttle Columbia disinigrated over north central Texas on February 1st, 2003, just 16 minutes before it was going to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Seven astronauts aboard the shuttle lost their life. Columbia was the oldest shuttle in NASA fleet. It was a short 16 day mission. The seven astronauts who lost their life are Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark and the first Israeli astronaut in space, Ilan Ramon. -
Earthquake Under the Indian Ocean
An 8.9 magnitude earthquake occurs deep under the Indian Ocean. It triggers massive tsunamis that killed over 283,000 people in 14 different nations. The quake had the energy of 23,000 atomic bombs. It caused a rupture more than 600 miles long. -
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina destroyed Louisiana killing 1,464 people.The disaster was predicted 3 years earlier by the newspaper. It was considered one of the worst natural disasters in United States history. Flooding occured in New Orleans due to levee failure. The hurricane was the sixth strongest hurricane ever measured by pressure in the Atlantic basin. It was also the third strongest hurricane to ever make a U.S landfall measured by pressure. -
Saddam Hussein
Saddam Hussein had a great amout of power in Iraq, he was the president. He ruled by using fear and terror. On March 19th, 2003 the U.S attacked Iraq to help Iran. While the fighting was going on Hussein fled Baghdad. On December 13th, 2003 he was caught by U.S forces hiding in a hole in al-Dwar, near Tikrit. On November 5th, 2003 Saddam was sentenced to death, and on December 30th he was executed by hanging. -
Oil Spill
November 7th, 2007 a South Korean container ship, Cosco Busan, collided with the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge in California. About 58,000 gallons of bunker oil and disesel fuel was spilled. The Korean's paid $36.8 million. The state mainly used the money for natural resources, to help restore and improve them. -
The Election of Obama
Barack Obama wins U.S President. He beat Hillary Clinton, and John McCain. Barack Obama was the first African American President of the U.S. He took place as 44th President of the United States of America. -
The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty's crown was reopened to the public on July 4th, 2009. The crown was closed for 8 full years due to security reasons following the World Trade Center attacks.The National Park Service closed the attraction because they worried that it would be difficult for visitors to evacuate quickly in the event of an emergency. -
B.P Oil Spill
The B.P Oil Spill killed 11 people and injured 17. Over 1,000 animals (birds,turtles,mammals) were reported dead, including many already on the endangered species list. Only 6% of animals were reported cleaned. The B.P Oil Spill is the biggest Oil Spill in American history. Between 17 and 39 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th,2010. -
Osama Bin Laden's Death
On May 2nd, 2011, the man responsible for the disaster of 9/11 was killed. Osama Bin Laden was shot in the head by a group of American Navy Seals. The Navy Seals were sent out on a secret mission from President Barack Obama, which nobody knew about. The Navy Seals buried Bin Laden at sea. This was a very joyful occasion for the United States.
