  • Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln
    Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 and was assassinated in 1865. He was the 16th president of the United States during the civil war. He freed the slave with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. With the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, slavery was abolished when the civil war ended.
  • Harriet Tubman

    Harriet Tubman
    Born in 1822 as a slave on a farm in Maryland, Harriet Tubman was able to escape in 1849 with the help of a secret organization named "Underground Railroad" and fled to Pennsylvania.
    She died in 1913, after dedicating her life to freeing hundred of other slaves and fight against slavery.

    American Civil War (1861 to 1865)
    The American Civil War confronted the Northern, who wanted to abolish slavery in the country, and the Southern US States who wanted to keep it as it was because they needed African slaves to farm their crops of tobacco and cotton. In the end, the Northern won.
  • "Jim Crow" laws

    "Jim Crow" laws
    Even though slavery was abolished, Many southern states still treat the African-American people as inferior to the white people. So as a "counterattack" they implemented laws in 1876, which are also called the "Jim Crow" laws, to keep black people separate from white people (segregation).
