Establishment of the Black Codes
Black Codes left African Americans with little freedom. Even the freedom to chose a type of work was often dificult. Many white southerners believed that black people didn't deserve the same rights as white people. -
Period: to
Reconstruction and the New South
After the Civil War between the Confederate and Union states. Since many of the fights had taken place the Southeren ststaes, most of the farm lands and the very few factories in the south had been destroyed. Since the slaves had been freed, there is now segregation between the races. here is a timeline to show what happened during the Reconstructiuon. -
13th Amendment
The 13th amendment abolished slavery. The 13th amendment was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865. This was the first amendment established after and because of the Civil war. -
Freedmen's Bureau
Helping freed slaves, this bureau was established in 1865. This provided land, food, money, and even education for African Americans for all ages. This group was looked down upon by the Southeners who still supported slavery. -
Abraham Lincoln's Assassination
While the President was attending a special performance of the comedy, "Our American Cousin", he was assasianted. The assasin was later found out to be John Wilkes Booth, had made it out of there without being arrested right away by riding away by horse back. He was then carried to the boarding house across from the theater, but the doctor's best efforts failed to work. He later died at 7:22 AM on April 15th, 1865. -
Grandfather Clause
The Grandfather Clause, was designed to help limit the ability of African American men to vote. It did this becasweu since this was the first generation of African American men to be free, their grandfathers did not even get to be free, let alone vote. -
Klu Klux Klan
The Klu Klux Klan were against African Americans. They were first established to preevnt African Americans from voting. However, later on they started to get more violent, hanging blacks from trees,and bombing churches with African American children inside. They wore white hoods, to hide their identity, and or to probably state that white are better then other races. -
Election of President Ulysses S. Grant
The past years for General Ulysses S. Grant were tough. Leading the Union to their victory, Grant had been a very important part of the Union forces. After the Abraham Lincoln assasination and President Johnson taking charge, it was time to vote. The Republicans favored Grant for the position and won the election in 1868, becoming our 18th president. -
14th Amendment
The 14th amendment, granted citizenship. They also stated any person born in the United States is atomatically a citizen. This pleased many of the African Americans. -
15th Amendment
The Fiftenth (15th) Amendment gave African American men the right to vote. Since the literacy test and the poll tax were later on established, it pretty much ruined most of African American's from voting. -
Compromise of 1877
This Compromise was made secretly by the representatives of each party. The Democrats agreed to accept the Republican presidential electors if the Republicans took their soldiers back, to appoint a Democrat to the President's Cabinet, and so on and so on. -
African Americans in Government
As the struggles of the Civil war started to fade, the South had to form new governments abiding by the new laws. The South elected new representatives to Congress. The Congress then refues to seat them for the were black. Eventually, they did start electing African Americans to government jobs, all the way up until the election of our first African american president, Barack O' Bama. -
Establishment of the Poll Tax
This tax required every man would have to pay a tax to be able to vote. This was pushed upon by the former Confederate states, wanting to limit the former slaves' freedom. Since the Southern states knew that the former slaves did not have too much money, they did this so the African American men who wanted to vote would not be able to because they could not afford it. -
Establishment of the Literacy
There were many uneducated African Americans after the Civil War and during the Reconstruction Era. Since the Southerners wanted to exclude African Americans as much as they could, they pushed for the Literacy Test. Before being able to vote, the male voters had to pass a reading and writing test. Whites found that literacy tests also would exclude large numbers of white people from becoming voters since many white people could not read or write either. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
This law stated that as long as the African americans and the White have equal facilities, then segregation was legal. This meant that blacks would have to eat at seperate resturants, and even kids would have to go to seperate schools. Turns out that the White facilities did not follow the rules by having better facilities then the blacks. -
Jim Crow Laws
From the 1880s into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced segregation by the Jim Crow Laws. This then enforced whites and blacks to attend different schools. For example, Alabama enforced the law by stating that if a white nurse had a black man come in for treatment, she could turn him down and not care for him.
