Battle of Midway
This was the WW@ naval battle that was fought mostly with aircraft in which the US destroyed Japan's first line carrier strength. Japans goal was to remove the US as a Pacific Power in order to gain territory. This marked a turning point in the war. -
Battle of Stalingrad
This was the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad.It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turn of favoring the Allies. -
D-Day
On this day, 156,000 American, Canadian, and British forces landed on 5 beaches of the heavily fortified coast of France's Normandy region. This attack was supposed to initiate the Western Allied effort to liberate mainland Europe. D-Day was the beginning of the end for not only Germany but Hitler as well. -
Battle of the Bulge
This was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during WW2. This was the last attempt by Hitler to try and split the Allies in two in their drive towards Germany and destroy their ability to supply themselves. This battle brought an end to the Germans and the Nazi reign. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
This was the major battle when the US Marine Corps landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima. The cause of this battle was that the US was in need of a base near the Japenese coast. Once the US captured the island, they shut down Japan's air fields, this then stopped them from being able to scout for incoming bombers. -
VE Day
This day commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces. This was the day that Hitler killed himself and the Nazi's declared the end of the war. -
Battle of Okinawa
The Battle of Okinawa was significant because it served as an example of how deadly the invasion of mainland Japan would be. The Battle of Okinawa was the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific campaign and the last major campaign of the Pacific War. -
Dropping of The Atomic Bombs
This was when the US dropped the world's first atomic bomb. This then later lead to the dropping of bombs over Japanese regions then bringing the surrender of the Japanese force. -
VJ Day
On this day it was announced that Japan had surrendered the the Allies, effectively ending WW2. Since then, August 14th and 15th are now known as "Victoryover Japan" or VJ day.
