Proclamation of Neutrality
Washington passed this proclamation when the U.S. was first formed so they wouldn't get between Great Britain and France who were warring nations. -
XYZ Affair
John Adams sent 3 diplomats to meet with the foreign minister. The minister sent 3 agents to the U.S. asking for a bribe and other terms and in return the diplomats could meet with him. -
Convention of 1800
Along with the Treaty of Mortefontaine this brought about to the end of the undisputed Quasi war. -
Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory for Napoleon of France causing the size of the U.S. to double. -
Embargo Act
Jefferson passed this act to stop trading with Great Britain and France, seeing as they were warring nations and the U.S. didn't want to get caught up with either side. This ended up hurting the economy more than it would've helped. -
War of 1812
This started because British were using impressment to put American sailors in the British Navy. This was a turning point for the Americans because they gained respect and strength fighting off the British. -
Treaty of Ghent
This came about to end the war of 1812. The treaty didn't benefit either side and both countries were forced to only keep the territories they had control of before the war. -
Monroe Doctrine
Stated that the U.S. wouldn't interfere in international affairs, the U.S. wouldn't interfere with existing colonies, the Western Hemisphere was closed to further colonization, and any attempt by a European power to colonize the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act.
