Proclamation of Neutrality
In this proclamation, George Washington stated and declared that the United States was to remain neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britain. It also warned about legal punishments that would be given to any American helping a side or country in war. -
XYZ Affair
This was an attempt by John Adams to soothe the situation with France by sending two diplomats to go and speak to French authorities. Instead, there were three men sent by the officials to ask for money from them before passing through. Adams made this public and Americans did not pay the French what they asked for. -
Convention of 1800
This ended the Quasi War between America and France. Napoleon wanted to sign it as soon as possible to hurry up and conquer other nations in Europe. It was signed in Paris and also ended the peacetime military alliance been the two. -

Embargo Act
This was a law passed by Congress and supported by President Thomas Jefferson in an attempt to weaken the economies of rivaling nations. It didn't however work that way because it actually weakened the economy of the U.S. and actually helped New England's economy flourish. This act was repealed in 1809. -
War of 1812
This war was caused by impressment of the British and from their actions of trying to seize American trading ships. They were also encouraging Indians to attack the U.S. Oliver Perry had victory against the British and in 1814, Washington D.C. was burned -
Treaty of Ghent
This was a peace treaty that ended the war between the United States and Britain. The treaty returned anything (like territory) owned by either side before the war and didn't have any benefits given to them, just returned everything to how it was. -
Monroe Doctrine
This declared that the United States should not get involved with wars happening in Europe and that it would not get in the way of existing colonies, especially those in the Western Hemisphere.
