Proclamation of Neutrality
This was an official announcement made by President George Washington declaring a state of neutrality in the conflict between France and Great Britain. -
XYZ Affair
This was a foreign encounter between two United States diplomats and 3 agents from France. They met to try to settle disputes among the US and France. The US diplomats were met with bribery when the 3 agents said that they must pay a certain amount before they can meet with French officials. -
Convention of 1800
After the XYZ Affair, the relationship between the US and France was not good at all. The Convention of 1800 brought peace between the two nations. -
Louisiana Purchase
President Jefferson bought this land from Napoleon of France for $15 million! This doubled the size of the United States. -
Embargo Act
Initiated by President Jefferon which stopped trade between the US and the two nations that were currently at war: Great Britain and France, This greatly hurt the American economy. -
The War of 1812
This was caused by the British capturing American ships and making the sailors fight in the British navy. This was called impressment. Most Americans did not like this and wished to go to war with Britain. They were called WarHawks. The war ended in 1814. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty, signed by all parties that were involved in the war, ended the War of 1812. -
Monroe Doctrine
James Monroe issued this to basically state, "hands off the western hemisphere!"
