    This rebellion began under the leadership of Hong Xiuquan who thoughthimself to be the younger brother of Jesus Christ. He believed that he was sent to reform China. With the help of his friend, Feng Yunshan, they created a religious group named the God Worshipers, and led them in rebellion
  • Wuchang Uprising

    Wuchang Uprising
    The Wuchang Uprising happened on the day of October 10, 1911. After one night of fighting, Wuchang was occupied. On October 12, the revoluionary army took control of Hanyang and Hankou. This victory led to the establishment of the Republic of China, under Sun Yat-sen.

    The Northern Expedition was a campaign for the Chinese Nationalist army. The point of this expedition was for the army to go north from Guanzhou to the Yangtze River, battling warlords along the way.

    Mukden Incident

    This event first started on September 18 when a bomb went off and setroyed a section of railway track that was near the city of Mukden. The Japanese owned the railway and blamed Chinese nationalist for the the incident, even though it was believed that the Japanese really blew up there on track as an excuse to taku over Mukden.

    Long March The Long March began October 16, 1934, during a civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists. At this point, the Communists knew that they were on the verge of losing, so they fled. The Long March eneded on October 20, 1935 in Shaanxi, where the Communists met up with other Red Army troops

    Known as the the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, this war had a major impact on theChinese Revolution. Up to 20 million people died of this war.

    Nanking Massacre

    On December 13, 1937, the first wave of the Japanese troops arrived in Nanking. The people in Nanking had already heard about some of things that the Japanese had done. During the massacre, the Japanese murdered thousands of people and whole families, they raped thousands of the women, and looted and burned some of the buildings in Nanking.
  • Founding of People's Republic of China

    On October 1, 1949 the People's Republic of China was proclaimed by Mao Zedong. This caused Chiang Kai-shek many other national elit to flee to Taiwan where the hope to reconquer the mainland lived on.
  • Chinese Nationalists move Capital to Taiwan

    On December 8 in 1949, Chinese Nationalists move their capital to Taiwan because they are loosing ground to the Communists. This action from the Nationalists introduced a "two Chinas" scenerio.

    The Seventeen Point Agreement with Tibet was signed on May 23, 1951. The main purpose of this agreement was for China to try to gain Tibet peaceably. China ended up forcing the delgated of Tibet to sign the treaty.

    The May 16 Notification was a public announcement that accused Mao Zedong of being an imperialist. This was released by the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. This announcement caused Mao to flee to Albania.

    The People's Republic of China was admitted into the U.N. on October 25, 1971. American U.N. representatives voted for the admission of China. They had their own reasons as to why to admit China into the U.N.

    Nixon visits China February 21, 1972 was the day that President Nixon landed in China. The whole visit was televised, so many American citizens had the oppotunity to see Nixon in China, and see many shots of the country. Nixon stayed in China for eight days.

    Hong Kong Returned to ChinaOn July 1 in 1997, Hong Kong was finally returned to China. In 1985, the Britich and the Chinese government signed a treaty stating that China would get Hong Kong back if they promised to let it continue to have a capitalist system.

    Macau was handed back over to China in 1999. LIke Hong Kong, Macau was under a "one country, two sytems" policy. Edmund Ho Hah Wau was elected chief executive of Macau.

    Hainan Island incidentOn April 1, 2001, a Chinese fighter jet collided with a U.S. spy-plane. The U.S. plane was flying off the coast of Hainan Island when a Chinese pilot came and intercepted them. He started flying too close and eventually collided with the spy-plane.
