1st opium war
Great Britain and China fought because China didnt want Britain to bring in any opium to China. G.B. won the war and gained Hong Kong and forced China to open treaty ports. They also won special trading rights. -
Sino-Japenese War
Japan gained a big win over China and took over Formosa, a city in Taiwan. -
Boxer Rebellion (uprising)
"Boxers" wanted to destroy all foreign influence, often attacking or killing any foreigners they saw. After a while Europeans came to the foreigner's rescue and defeated the boxers allowing the foreigners to leave. -
Open Door Policy
To benifit the Western Powers we now issued the Open Door Policy which allowed all foreigners equal trade with China. Foreigners were still in control of China's trade making the Chinese angry. -
Communist Party organized (formed)
The Communist Party formed in China in 1921. Mao Zedong became the leader of the Communists a few years later. -
The Long March
In the 1930's the Nationalist Party controlled most of China and wanted to get rid of the Communists; however, a group of Communists escaped to northwest China in a long difficult journey that later became known as The Long March. -
Nationalists Flee to Taiwan/Mao Controls Communist China
After WWII the Communists and Nationalist Parties had a civil war. The Communists won, taking over China and causing the Nationalists to flee to Taiwan. -
Beginning of the Great Leap Forward
Now that the Communist Party had taken over China Mao Zedong, the Communist leader, started the Great Leap Forward to modernize China. This ended up to be a huge fail causing mass famine and ruining the economy. -
Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
Now that The Great Leap Forward had failed Mao wanted to start another phase of revolution. He started the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" because he wanted to get rid of all the olds and combine China into one class. At this time rich families were despised and looked down upon. -
President Nixon Visits China
In 1972 President Richard Nixon visited China to better the U.S.'s relationship with China. -
Mao dies as does Cultural Rvolution
Along with Moa the Cultural Revolution died in 1976. His wife stayed in power until 1978, but was later imprisoned. Now leaders with different ideas for China took over. -
Tianamen Square Massacre
In Beijing, China students gather in Tianamen Square in protest about Hu's, their old leader's, death. They got into fights with officials and the officials saw them as a threat to their country. China's military came in to clear out the students with guns and ran them over with tanks.
